A little more about Mary…
Favorite books: Little Women is my absolute favorite book. I own a 1905 edition that’s fifty percent longer than current editions. I also like Cold Mountain and Thirteen Moons by Charles Frazier, Killer Angels by Michael Shaara, and Gone With the Wind.
Hobbies/Activities I enjoy: Reading, shade gardening, hiking, bicycling, snorkeling (when I’m some place warm!) travel, attending church (my own, and while traveling), and attending local historical society meetings. I love American History.
One funny or interesting thing about me: I cannot walk through my heavily wooded yard without picking up fallen branches and tree limbs. I’m constantly building up piles to be hauled to the bonfire. My dog finds this behavior very odd. Needless to say, she will not fetch a stick.
Personal info: I worked as a Middle School teacher for a number of years, and also had several other positions afterward. My interest in American History led me to try my hand at historical fiction. My first sweet romance turned out a bit heavy with historical and battlefield detail, but still managed to point me in the right direction. I love writing about strong, independent woman who rely on their own initiative and their strong faith in God to overcome obstacles in their path.
My husband and I live in Ohio right now. I have one very large cat named Barney, and a Springer Spaniel named Miss Daisy. Both were strays we took in that had been dropped off in the neighborhood. In fact, the last eight pets we’ve owned were acquired in this manner. I wish those who abandon animals would attach a tag that indicates the pet’s name and date of birth since I don’t know if my dog is five or fifteen years old.
Author of: A Widow’s Hope and Never Far From Home (coming January 2010)
Favorite Scriptures or quotes: Verse 5 of Psalm 130 sums up my character, Hannah, in A Widow’s Hope: “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits for the Lord, and in His word I put my hope.” I also like Colossians 3:13 “You must make allowance for each other’s faults and forgive the person who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.”
